Sunday Salon # 3

Well I FINALLY finished The House of the Spirits by sheer determination and will power. It was awful. I normally put down books I do not enjoy but I was being stubborn with this one. I was reading it for 8 challenges so I didn't want to abandon it. (I am the cross over challenge queen)Plus so many people had spoken well of it I kept thinking it must get better soon. My "glowing" review will be up tomorrow at some point.

I finished listening to Dracula, my first audio book. I loved it! My review is here. I highly recommend listening or reading it if you have not already. I was pleasantly surprised.

CURRENTLY READING
  • Bel Canto by Ann Patchett: It is awesome. I am flying through it. Thank you to everyone who suggested I pick it up next.
CURRENTLY LISTENING TO:
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. I'm having so much fun. It is different from the version you see on TV. I'm at the part where Dorothy falls asleep in the poppies. BUT the Wicked Witch has not made an appearance yet!!!!! I've made a little challenge to myself to listen to the entire series of Oz stories.
WHAT I BOUGHT THIS WEEK
  • Thorn by Vena Cork

  • Half a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

  • The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman

  • One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson

  • A Field of Darkness by Cornelia Read

  • Brainless: The Lies and Lunacy of Ann Coulter by Joe Maguire

  • The Secret of Lost Things by Sheridan Hays
CHALLENGE UPDATE: by finishing The House of the Spirits I was able to add a "check off" to...
  • A ~ Z Reading Challenge (H Title)

  • Spring Reading Thing

  • Historical Reading Challenge

  • Banned Book Challenge

  • Orbis Terrarum Challenge

  • Book Awards Reading Challenge

  • Decades Challenge (1980)

  • Book Around the World
Personal note: my injured foot is still not healing well. I did return to work and taught Monday - Thursday. I called the doctor Thursday morning. He called back Thursday at 3:30 and wanted me in his office Friday morning at 8. By Friday at 11:30 a.m. I was having MRIs done of my foot. I go back tomorrow at 10 to have them read. Hopefully we'll be able to figure out what is going on! The original injury was March 4th. It has been a LONG time.

Hi Juli, yea I thought 6 months should be quite a reasonable time. But I’m not sure how fast or slow people read, so we could always extend it if it’s too short. By restrictive, do you mean the time or the selection of books?

ps: hope your foot gets better soon!

I just mean restrictive for me. Since I have so many challenges I need to be able to "cross over" my books and I won't be able to really do that with yours. :( I don't think. I might need to wait for "round 2"

I think its a really neat challenge idea though! I've been slowly picking books off the list to read.

Everyone reads differently. Most of the challenges I've joined have 1 month for each book. In my opinion more people will join if there is a longer window open to read the books! I guess it just depends what you're after as a host since its your challenge.

I'm sorry about your foot. Feet take time. I damaged a toe back in January and it still hasn't healed properly, so don't give up hope. I hope you enjoy 'Half of a Yellow Sun'. It was one of last year's great reads for me.

One book. Eight challenges. Impressive! :)
I loved Bel Canto when I read it a few years ago. Hope your foot is better soon.

I see you bought A Field of Darkness. I read this book and actually thought A Crazy School was better

A Field of Darkness was still good

Oh no, "The House of the Spirits" was that bad, huh? You are a better person than me. I'd have quit!

I found your blog through Weekly Geek and will be posting on it soon. By sheer coincidence, I've just reviewed the Librivox recording of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on my own blog, "Free Listens".
