Sunday Salon #2

Well my second Sunday Salon is no where near as exciting as the first. I'm still working on House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. I'm on page 164 of 433. It started VERY slowly and I almost re- shelved it. Bookgal left me a post encouraging me to keep reading and that it got better. It is better but still not the best novel I've read. If it wasn't covering several challenges for me I would probably return it to the shelf.

I'm also getting ready to return to teaching. I've been off since March 5th after breaking my foot so much more of my time has been devoted to preparing material for class and grading papers. the weather has also improved so I've been outside more and not stuck in bed.

I'm on the last chapter of my audio book Dracula. It has been phenomenal. I didn't realize how well written Dracula was. The narration leaves a little to be desire but since I downloaded it free from Librivox I can't complain. When I finish Dracula I'm moving onto some of the books from the L. Frank Baum Oz Series.

WHAT AM I READING NEXT?
I can't decide. Either...
  • Bel Canto by Ann Patchett or
  • The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
WHAT I'M LISTENING TO
  • Dracula by Bram Stoker
WHAT I BOUGHT THIS WEEK

  • The Frantic Woman's Guide to Life (Rulnick & Schneider)
  • The Lost Painting (Jonathan Harr)
  • Anna and the King of Siam (Margaret Landon)
  • Gardening Success
  • Beneath It All (Versel Lewis)
  • The Immortal (Angela Hunt)
  • The Reluctant Fundamentalist--for my husband

I'm not an Atwood fan, so my vote would go for 'Bel Canto' which our book group really enjoyed. We also very much enjoyed 'The House of the Spirits', but I agree it does take some time to get into. Do stick with it though, I'm sure you'll find it was worth the perseverance.

I want to read both The Blind Assassin and Bel Canto so I can understand your dilemma! I hope you enjoy whichever you choose.

I was surprised at how much I liked Dracula when I read it also. Bram Stoker is a very talented writer.

My vote for your next book goes to Bel Canto- it's wonderful, and I just finished her latest novel, Run.

And I'm recovering from a broken foot too! Along with three other people just in my circle of friends and acquaintances! It's been really bad karma for feet lately! Take care :) and thanks for stopping by my Sunday Salon at Bookstack.

I really like Margaret Atwood...but I had a hard time getting into "The Blind Assassin." Again...I'll vote for "Bel Canto" as its a great book! I have Dracula on my 888 challenge list and I am looking forward to it. I seem to have read a ton of non-fiction lately. Have you read "Frankenstein?" We read that for my book club last year...and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

You will like BEL CANTO, I know the feeling of starting a long book and feeling so-so about it, sometimes I put it back, if it received good reviews I keep going for a while to see if it isn't my mood, I am going to vote for Otis, next week I will challenge you for Oliver :P

I also liked THE BLIND ASSAASSIN I am a Margaret Atwood fan!!!! Now Dracula I have never read, now I want to...

I liked both books but I might go with Bel Canto because it's a faster start after House of Spirits. Once you get past the section on Rosa the Beautiful it really does get better.
